Most of the time in the work that I do, I create from memory on the spot. What comes along with this is a feeling, an inkling and urge to do something and then as if in a trance it kinda spills out of me. This process is not totally without direction as there is an inking of a thought, whether I want to draw a rocket an organism an abstract or a monster and I'll hash this out until the feeling is satisfied. When that feeling of satisfaction is finally there I'll find myself faced with something that seems as if I've experienced before but at the same time it's all very new to me.</div>

<br />
<br />
I am continually blown away by the creative process! There have been so many works that just pop out of me of which I was not expecting or planning to do. These just seem to unfold out of thin air and for this I am truly grateful. Yellow Box is one of these works.<br />
<br />
For the past year I have been exploring and creating abstract comics. In have also been playing with forms of packaging for quite a number of years and I was particularly thinking about abstract packaging as of late.<br />
<br />
After just finishing a few packaging related pieces and on an unexpected day off from a Saturday work day I decided to redraw in Adobe Illustrator a little wonky looking drawing of an opened and flattened box, not really knowing what I was going to do with it.<br />
<br />
Right away it seemed to me that it was animated, moving and telling me something. This box is pretty much how you see it in the second panel of the comic. I quickly copied it and rotated it and put it beside(3rd panel). It <i>was</i> moving.<br />
<br />
The idea of a discarded box blowing, flying in the air was there, then at one point it looked like a kite, which then brought in the rest of the pieces such as the string, tape and the little ribbon thingys you see on classic kite images. My ribbons are more like feathers though.<br />
<br />
Now, it's interesting, that the first panel was the last one conceived. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th panels were all done in sequence as you see here except that in the 4th panel, at the forward end of the string where the 'bird' is, I had originally had the X from the second panel repeated. This was all fine until I completed the comic by creating the 1st panel and then looked at the whole thing again.<br />
<br />
I saw that the image/idea of the X was fine in the 3rd panel but in the 4th panel I felt that I was bothered that the box was still being pulled/guided by this X. Then in a stroke of inspiration this X turned into a bird and by doing so magically transformed this otherwise plain sequential strip into something meaningful. For me it was as if a switch was turned on and there was a whole layer of meaning that I had not seen while creating it. Yeah it's kinda corny, but I'm an emotional guy and I was literally swept up in this Holy flood of tears. It was just so beautiful, transformative and I guess that personal.<br />
<br />
I find it interesting that I fumble along and I create this. Where did it come from? From outside of me or from the inside of me? Perhaps a fusion of both with my hands in the middle. I do believe that I am a channellor of sorts as I have witnessed this in other works of mine. This comic is also unlike most of my work.<br />
<br />
I may not find out the answer to this, but I do know that this comic really lifted my spirits and also made me thankful that I did not have to go to work that Saturday. I also know that if I had re-drawn that box sketch on any other day, I would have had either nothing more than a sketched out flattened box or quite possibly some other Fantastic piece of art. The feelings and connections on any other day would have been completely different.<br />
<br />
*******<br />
<br />
On another cosmic note.<br />
Not that I was trying to do so, but it has been exactly 1 year since my previous post. Exactly.!?<br />
Cycles.<br />
What have I been doing?<br />
<br />
Well, simply, about 200 new works, depending on the importance that I want to put on them and depending upon what constitutes a new work. I just can't put everything up, nor do I have the time for it all.<br />
<br />
So, in the following posts, you will see new work or you will see some not-so-new work. In my world, it really does not matter.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"> Mach Baron - vector art by NAK</span></div>
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
10 years ago while I was in venice for a film festival, I bought myself a little metal/plastic robot. I had no idea who it was until recently when I saw some pictures in the new Famous Monsters magazine. There was an article specifically on this guy and his predessor the Red Baron who was from a Japanese animated kids show. This guy here is Mach Baron. Finding this out gave me some inspiration to create an illustration of him. I didn't want to do a static pose that would make it look like just a toy. I wanted it to have some movement and also showing some emotion. I also didn't want an action fighting image either. In reality within the show, he is a controlled (static) giant robot fighting no good, so I was exercising some creative license and bringing him down to our size as if there was a person in a robot shell.<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
I took some close up photos of my 2.5 inch Baron and was amazed at how just a slight angle change made such a dramatic emotional shift in the reading of the figure, which of course makes sense. It's all in the body language. So even though it was the same figure with no facial change, one looked like he could beat the crap out of you and another looked like he was bugged that you stopped him to ask for an autograph or something.<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
I was intending to do a background, which I started, but I was coming up with too many options to decide on a specific one. The white background also looked really nice so just as a default this is how it is for now.<br />

<br />
After the design I did in the previous post which I turned into a MEME poster, I took the design into another direction which I also quite like. This could easily end up as a cover for one of my Acid Man books.<br />

Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition is happening this weekend and just for kicks I added some typography to a digital image I made earlier this week. This event is turning out to be quite the festival bringing in some top name acts in the industry. I created this graphic just after the MEME poster. I've always loved colorful geometric design work such as in charts and diagrams from my school day textbooks, but I think it goes even further into my background from being Ukrainian and growing with Ukrainian Easter Eggs.Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7345999578013422221.post-21683680742515127342013-02-26T20:41:00.002-08:002013-02-26T20:41:41.190-08:00Chock-Full<br />

<br />
D-N-Aid is Nakfactorium's newest novelty item. Do you dare to try it? You can change who you are, just in time for the New Year! These are some of the packages I made just as a gimmick. I was thinking about Kool-Aid drink mix and the Lik-m-aid brand powered sugar candy. My designs are in the style of my <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">memory</span> of the Lik-m-aid packages from the time when I was buying them as a kid.<br />

<br />
<br />
Boy did I ever have fun creating this little novelty item! I've done other pieces of artwork and novelty items centered around the loose leaf page and this is the newest one. Yes it is that small. Each pocket folder is 22mm x 28mm and contains 8 loose leaf sheets with printed artwork on it plus one sheet that is blank. There are seven different sets available at the moment and each folder has its own subject label attached with hand lettering in pencil.<br />
<br />
The idea started off as a juvenile set of pencil-like drawings that a young kid (me) might do in school, then it quickly grew into other sets of subjects and styles. There is an assortment set called NAK which has a sample from each of the styles but are not duplicated in the other sets. All of the drawings were done in Adobe Illustrator specifically for this project except for the ENG set which are reproductions of my breath doodles. If anyone is interested in a set or two mail me 5 or 6 bucks for each and I'll pay the postage. And for 10$ you can get a set with an original pencil or ink drawing on the blank loose leaf!<br />

Here is the drawing below that I actually did in 2005. I just recently came across it and had to transpose it. Below the drawing is the color scheme that I was originally working on but I ended up turning it into a landscape. It's alright but I'm not crazy about it. And probably because of that, I started to play around with it. You can see the sequence of events that then leads to the image at the top.<br />

As I promised last week, here are a few more stereoscopes for your cross-eyed viewing pleasure!<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
Piet Mondrian is one of my favorite artists. He's famous for his compositions in red, yellow and blue. (He hated green.) He was an expressionist painter at first, then through a period of 25 years he distilled his subject matter to its simplest form. He then spent the next 25 years painting variations of his red, yellow and blue compositions. I cannot help myself but to love his dedication and work. Here are a few compositions I came up with to play with my stereoscope eyes.<br />

Here's how to do it.</div>
<div>
1. Click beside the image to get a larger view.</div>
<div>
2. Place your finger between the images.</div>
<div>
3. Slowly move your finger towards you while keeping a focus on your finger. A third image will slowly grow between the two images.</div>
<div>
4. When this middle image is the same size as the other two, stop moving your finger towards you. </div>
<div>
5. Remember to keep your focus on that distance where you finger is and do not change your focus to the image behind it.</div>
<div>
6. Move your hand quickly away (don't change your focus ) and that middle image will become three-dimensionally clear!</div>

This is an e-reader cover image for a short story by Peter Atwood. He used to spearhead a publishing company in Winnipeg called Blizzard Publishers. They hired me for cover art illustration and design work and I liked how they were open to me using different styles to suit the book. I wish more publishers would be open to that way of working, in just knowing that the artist (me) would create something very fitting. Of course Blizzard and I would discuss the proposed treatment for the book cover from various ideas I would come up with, then go from there. You can see some of these covers on my website.<br />

Oh those beautiful Black Hills...um, I mean Holes. Black Holes. Just having some playtime with a souvenir cover I came across. I've never been there. You all recognize this famous tourist site, yes?<br />

<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
The summer always brings out the Godzilla in me. I am sure this has to do with the memories of watching late-night Godzilla movies in my youth.<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
These two different paintings have two very similar Godzilla poses. These are two new works done a couple weeks apart and I plan on doing a third with using a similar pose. But why bother you ask? Well, yes there are other poses at my disposal, so I wonder too why I spend time doing similar work and the simple answer is that the original idea was not done yet. What I mean is that when I come up with a painting idea, have an image in my head of how I want it to look, but when I actually start to paint the work, it takes a left turn right from the first brush stroke and I realize right away that this painting is going to end up being a very different work than I intended. Which I think is great because I have something in front of me that I have never seen before and it's quite exciting. It is also a challenge though because you are confronted with color or design problems that you have not worked out previously in your mind or on paper, through your previous work or even through other peoples previous work that you may have been looking at or influenced by and they already figured out some of the problems.<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
Sometimes it has taken me three tries to finally get my original vision onto canvas. But then I end up with three different new works where otherwise I would only have one. So, I am going to try one more time for my original concept of this Godzilla pose which I think I will do on the computer in Adobe illustrator sometime.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
While watching the movie Monster Zero I did a quick sketch of one of the aliens. I liked it enough that on my Godzilla Weekend (see Smashmonster blog) I created a fuller illustration of the X-Seijin alien. (above)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I wanted to submit the drawing to a Godzilla fan magazine but I thought I should see if my reproduc-tion was close enough to how they were portrayed in the movie. Yeah, it was close enough but really, just by going with my sketch, it was quite a bit different, so I did another version. The first one is in fact more alien like, but the bottom one is more like the movie. It's interesting to work from loose sketches of something you saw and to work from your memory as they create more original work. That is if your not worried about their outcome.</div>

Place your finger between the images.</div><div>3. Slowly move your finger towards you while keeping a focus on your finger. A third image will slowly grow between the two images.</div><div>4. It's a strange feeling because sometimes you don't have the whole picture just the beginning of it. You know how it is supposed to start then once you get going, once you connect spirit to action or idea to paper (or computer in this instance) the rest just spills out. Kind of like a fragment of a dream that you barely remember but once you start thinking about it......</div><div> So in this instance this 'vision' was simply three bars... three vertical rectangles, which soon turned to six and then really the rest is a bit of a blur and before I knew it it was finished. Sure I can go into variations at this point, have different borders, redeligate the surrounding space dimensions, but the main engine is all there.</div><div> When I had the vision at first it was like having three notes to a familiar song, "yeah I can name that tune", and then you start singing and let it go. The New Music theme was there as soon as I put those black keys in and then the title was there right at that moment because you don't have 5 black keys in a row on a piano or keyboard, so this whole idea of playing the notes between the notes and the sounds that are made in between those notes are what really then informed the process.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> <br /></div><div><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WxOMVssGKa4/Tt1ndlbyfWI/AAAAAAAAA_c/XWqp_qmWBWo/s1600/two_is_one_figure_pasternak.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WxOMVssGKa4/Tt1ndlbyfWI/AAAAAAAAA_c/XWqp_qmWBWo/s400/two_is_one_figure_pasternak.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682812062773968226" /></a><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XUjg9OAkxQA/Tt1ndW0ULLI/AAAAAAAAA_Q/DCkjSV2K0xI/s1600/two_is_one_craft_pasternak.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 205px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XUjg9OAkxQA/Tt1ndW0ULLI/AAAAAAAAA_Q/DCkjSV2K0xI/s400/two_is_one_craft_pasternak.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682812058850307250" /></a><br /></div></div>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.com
